Jordan Rakei What We Call Life

Two new(ish) releases from the specialist label Intrada: John Williams’ wonderful scores to The Eiger Sanction (1975) and Monsignor (1982).

Until now, you could only get a short album (long out of print) of re-recorded tracks for Eiger and Monsignor had only had a very limited release in 2007, again, long OOP. Both these releases are greatly expanded and sourced from better tapes so sound wonderful.

They’re pretty niche interest, so rather expensive even before you factor in the postage costs from the US which are enough to prompt double incontinence.

How is it? I saw there are a couple of Steely Dan/Donald Fagen live releases coming out and was thinking about getting them.

Hi @SeasonsEnd I was going to post a little more about The Nightfly Live on Sunday after another spin, but here are a couple of my initial thoughts, as you kindly asked…

DF’s original Nightfly is of course, an all time classic release for many reasons, and I was concerned that this Live recorded version would not ‘work’ - but thankfully it does and with some style too!

It isn’t an exact replica but has small enhancements here and there that fit well with Donald’s original score. As you would expect, the performance is first class, and I was very surprised how good the Live recording is, and in particular quality of the lead vocal - also considering his age at the time!

I have seen Steely Dan in concert but unfortunately missed out on Donald solo - this CD captures the show pretty much perfectly, and I would recommend it to any fan. I found it a very enjoyable alternative to the original, which will still get regularly played here anyway!

As for the new SD Live disc… I will comment on that later in the day…

Thanks for this. I look forward to hearing your thoughts on the Steely Dan album too!

@SeasonsEnd First thing to take note of is that the new SD Live is actually the same band line up as The Nightfly Live!

As someone who really likes SD’s previous live release Alive In America I was not sure if this would be worthwhile particularly without Walter…

…and the fact that 5 of the tracks here were covered on that disc.
2 Kid Charlemagne
8 Aja
9 Peg
10 Bodhisattva
11 Reelin’ in the Years

Having said that I do feel the high quality of the performance and recording makes it a worthy purchase, just even more so if you haven’t got Alive in America! Maybe they will consider releasing some of the other recent SD Full Album Live performances they did like the Royal Scam, if these are successful.
