Following Jack de Johnette’s sad passing a post on this forum alerted me to a live double cd of the Parallel Realities album with Pat Metheny, Dave Holland and Herbie Hancock. I was not aware of this so immediately bought it and it is fabulous. I can see it getting many plays. Thanks to whoever it was who alerted me to it.
Just got the new Boz Scaggs release, Detour, this is the Japanese Shm-cd version, it has one bonus track compared to the UK version, stye is jazz classic covers and personal favourites of his, very laid back songs, well recorded and interesting listen.
Arrived this evening during dinner, so not listened yet.
Convoluted story this. I knew nothing about Bortkiewicz.
But one of my all-time favourites is Rimsky-Korsakov’s Scheherazade. Somewhere up-thread came a posting from @BertBird about the pianist Etsuko Hirose. Digging deeper I discovered that she had done a transcription of Scheherazade for piano - so that had to be bought. Love it!
The second piece on Hirose’s CD is Bortkiewicz’s “Thousand and One Nights”. I liked that as well - very much “shades of Schereherzade” - so my thinking went along the lines of “how would it sound if orchestrated?” Further research on t’internet revealed that the composer had orchestrated his original piano suite. And so I have ended up here.
interesting, were are you located as i have it on order here in Germany saying release date 21 November, delivery 27th,also interested in how you obtained the Shm version, thanks in advance, maybe you are in Japan?
Interesting. I’ve gone though life thinking that I was not fond of solo (“classical”) piano, but that has been turned on its head by Etsuko Hirose‘s Scheherazade. (In fact it’s playing at the moment!)
Perhaps it is possible to teach an old** dog new tricks!
A fine collection, which I have. Still have the first two on LP (that’s “vinyls” for our younger members). Also, downloads of those two in Italian. Saw them at uni in the early ‘70s.
