Etta Jones - Don’t Go To Strangers, Prestige/OJC (2014)

This has been on my wish list for more than a few years after hearing Amy Winehouse and Paul Weller’s version which is excellent but this original is much better in fact there isn’t a bad record on this LP.

Once you have stopped faffing about spending money on hifi you get to spend all that spare cash on the thing that matters, the music.

Ok so I didn’t actually buy it, my every thoughtful daughter bought it for me. I bought the CD when it was first released and never got round to getting it on vinyl. I love the additional tracks too!

Bought this from bandcamp some months ago for my wife, it was delivered today. Sound: as good or better than the flac of the download code.

It must be monday, so it’s probably me: Sleeve I am not too thrilled about. 2 inner sleeves for the 2 records, of what feels like recycled paper. I would have preferred proper sleeves without the fancy artwork. The Special Edition was supposed to have some sort of a silver foiled sleeve, but no silver here.

Anyway: my wife is very happy! :sunglasses:

Two of Blighty’s finest Binker & Moses Escape the Flames sax/drums duet from a 2017 gig at somewhere mighty hip in 'Ackney. Stupendous.

Got a text from Mrs Dread, theres a parcel here for you! Decided to turn it in and whiz home to find another reliable next day service from those splendid people at Juno Records n The Royal Mail.

First up,
Ethiopian And His All Stars - The Return Of Jack Sparrow Nighthawk/Omnivore US
I am very pleased to discover that Omnivore US who I never heard of before have acquired the rights to the excellent Nighthawk label that put out some great quality Roots Reggae albums back in the eighties, I have a few originals but they came and duly vanished back in the day with only the occasional title appearing at specialists like Dub Vendor.
This is a previously unreleased gem from the great Leonard Dillon aka Jack Sparrow aka The Ethiopian with an All Star Band.
First impression of the package, I’m delighted, lovely gatefold with sleeve notes, photo of the master tape box, printed inners…

The Drifters Golden Hits Rhino/Atco re issue of this nice hits compilation originally from 1968 and I believe remastered from the original Mono master

Donny Hathaway - Live Rhino/Atco RSD re issue
(Playing time seems long for a single vinyl so hope SQ is good)

Rico recorded two fine albums for 2Tone, That Man Is Forward & Jama Rico. I have the former but somehow I missed Jama Rico on it’s original release, decent used copies have been hard to find since and pricey, so this 40th anniversary re issue from Chrysalis is most welcome, assuming it sounds good

Might be an expensive week, my pre orders for the AS Oliver Nelson & Sonny Rollins are due this Friday methinks

How does it sound?
There are very few reviews on Amazon but one reviewer says it’s very compressed has no dynamics or soundstage.
Like Dread I’m intrigued by the presence of Rat Scabies …

Hi. Rat Scabies plays only in “ Have a cigar”and he does it well. IMHO sound quality is good. Probably, due to the COVID restrictions, many parts were recorded at home or during online sessions and then assembled . I have very good bass, instruments are clearly defined in the stereo image and there are some nice performance. I’ve particularly appreciated
the guitar playing of Steve Hillage in shine on your crazy diamond ( parts 6-9)
Here is the band
