What Was The Last Vinyl You Bought?

Copies of these 2 albums are loaded on to Mrs Santa’s sleigh for me too. Sonny Rollins’, On Impulse and Sonny Clark’s, My Conception are in the goodie bag too.:christmas_tree::musical_score:

I can highly recommend Oliver Nelson Blues And The Abstract Truth from Acoustic Sounds Series as well

Both superb albums, esp. Mingus Mingus etc. I discovered these in Tower Records, when I was in London in the mid 90s. Enjoy!

Thanks Clive, I’m familiar with them but until now only had them on the GRPImpulse CD’s form some years back produced by Michael Cuscuna so now pleased to have them on decent vinyl.
My only slight pick with this Mingus Mingus Mingus is it sounds like the master tape (now 58 years old) might be showing age, I’m hearing some distortion, nothing too serious, not sure if its tape saturation on the recording or age degradation. Black Saint which is also a 58 year old tape sounds cleaner.
Cheers

Those are the same CDs I have. In my case they’re ripped to the NS01, but they sound superb.

These ones 1995 GRP re issues, they do sound good, I would expect possibly better with your rips as they are “20 Bit Super Bit Mapped” whatever that means, no benefit to a standard 16/44 CD player I doubt.

Anyway, this is the vinyl thread so apologys for the digression I shall get back to my gramophone

One more from my £1 supplier.

Now, a K-tel compliation is not normally what I’d do, but this is actually OK. Especially for a pound.

New Robert Plant & Alison Krauss album, which is excellent.

Ah! The old K-Tel label didnt know they were still around (also Ronco, Arcade etc)
they did actually do a few that were ok as I recall, dont have them anymore.
This I have fond memories of…

To be fair, if I’d seen the k-tel label I doubt I’ve have even paid the pound. But glad I did.

This Speakers Corner version of Inner Mounting Flame arrived today from Pure Pleasure. It’s my first SC record, so I had high hopes for a quality pressing. Sadly, however, it’s going to have to go back as there’s a 1/4” scratch in track one and the record is pressed slightly off centre, which is quite visible in the outer tracks and very audible towards the centre. Other than those issues, the sound is very open, revealing things I’m not sure I’ve heard before.

Sorry to hear that Clive, it’s not typical of SC pressings I’m my experience, hope the replacement is better

Quite. Speakers Corner usually use Pallas who are typically excellent.

Indeed. It says Pallas/Germany on the label which was stuck on the cellophane wrapping. In days gone by, when I bought records from real shops, I’d probably have accepted this. But I’ve become far less tolerant of clicks, wow and rumble, possibly because of the improvements in digital sources. High prices for vinyl also make me less tolerant and mail order means it’s easier to return. Thankfully with the internet it’s been possible for me to email a photo of the scratch and a video of the effect of the off-centre pressing on tone arm movement.

Miles Davis & John Coltrane - The Last Tour

I’ve owned this record a little while but only opened it this evening and what an exceptional record Wynton Kelly is outstanding especially on Part Two of On Green Dolphin Street.

This record emphasises that if the content is good enough then even ‘ordinary’ pressings can be as enjoyable as specialist so called Audiophile pressings.

I listened to this record right through front to back listening just to the music without thinking or analysing how my system sounded.
