Best internet radio anyone?

The Jazz Grove is planning to introduce a “listening cap” in the next few weeks that will restrict free radio listening to 30 or 60 minutes.

Bummer!

In my experience, Jazz Groove is the jazz station with the best sound quality. In some cases it is significantly better than Qobuz, which offers much higher resolutions. Nevertheless, I don’t know whether the introduction of “listening caps” is a good idea. Listeners might migrate and favour other stations (such as ALR Jazz Radio) that also sound good. Jazz Groove is a non-profit organisation according to its website. Do they have serious funding problems despite the high proportion of self-promotion in their programme? Or are they slowly turning into a commercial, profit-orientated radio station?

I shelled out a few quid a couple of years back as I appreciated their stations which is no doubt why I receive their e-mails. I did not intend this to be a regular thing as I am in UK. Over the last few years they seem to have expanded their operations and revamped their website no doubt at a cost.

I have a number of jazz stations that I listen to and find my “goto” alternates over time.

Your choice of ALR Jazz (which I also love) is interesting as a comparison. The station sounds as if it comes from the corner of a library/cafe which it probably does. But it is excellent. WRTI Jazz is another of my favourites.

Many thanks for the feedback and the tip about WRTI Radio Station. I’ve listened to it and also think it’s very good. I have set a favourite.
If Jazzgroove’s business model with donations no longer works sufficiently, it would probably be logical for them to switch to a business model behind the paywall. After all, Qobuz or Tidal also cost money and Jazzgroove offers then excellent sound quality without commercial advertising. Maybe I’ll take out an annual membership and try out the high resolution version without permanent donation advertising. I hope the integration into V-Tuner will work.
Many thanks @Paul_C at this point to the management of this thread - I have learnt a lot and received many valuable tips…

I have now taken out a Premium Plus membership with Jazz Groove for one year. I now have access to 5 separate jazz radio streams without adverts or interruptions in FLAC quality (44.1 kHz). The integration into the Naim app worked as described in the instructions on the Jazzgroove homepage. It’s a bit archaic because in the Naim app the stations have to be added manually on the VTuner website. Also, station URL’s have to be copied and pasted from the Jazzgroove website. In the end, however, it worked and the 5 Jazzgroove streams can be started in the Naim app (Webradio - added stations or defined as presets from there). They also offer metadata of the current tracks. I have not found the LOGO URL of Jazzgroove, so that no Jazzgroove logo is displayed in the Naimapp for the 5 streams. The skip function is also not available in the Naim app. But these are minor issues, the streams work and offer great sound quality (even higher than the already good MP3 quality of Jazzgroove West/East). A good thing for regular users with audiophile demands - recommended.

Yes I enjoyed it when I subscribed a couple of years back.
Glad it is all working well for you.

SuperStereo IS BACK (except for SuperStereo 3 for some reason at the moment).

Update: SuperStereo 3 is back.

My favorites are Radio Swizz Jazz and Jazz fm91 from Canada. Both are excellent for jazz lovers. No avandgarde and free.

Via Lyrion (LMS) Radionet plugin

Thanks for the tip, seems to works also through Naim app (vTuner)

Apparently it doesn’t work everywhere via VTuner. I can find the station with the search function, but it doesn’t play any music. If I also press the ‘Play’ button, the app switches to a different station…

Yes, might be geo restricted. That is sometimes a problem.

I forgot to mentioned I added the URL @Paul_C provided and used that to listen. It seems indeed that the station included in the directory does not work.

The station isn’t geo-locked.

Could somebody with authorization please fix this?

The station works fine via Sonos Radio, Audials & RadioNet … But vTuner is silent on my Naim app. :stuck_out_tongue_closed_eyes:

@Stevesky FYI

There is an exciting development for internet radio in connection with an upgrade of the Naim app. It looks very good: (Click here)
But be aware: paid services like Jazz Groove premium are not yet fully available (Click here)
