System Pics 2023

Yes, but this is a massive job. Sometimes easier, quicker and less messy to lay a new floor. Trust me, I’m a builder and doing the job you suggest is never easy.

Totally agree. From the perspective of a non-builder who did our pine floor… never again. Pay a specialist, or lay a new one X)

Achieving a good finish with the rented sanding machines is tricky, even diagonal sanding and being ultra careful. The pros use very different machines. The YouTube videos of specialists applying the sawdust and lacquer mix to fill the gaps are so far from the amateur reality it’s untrue!!

Ours looks alright from a distance, but I sit here and just notice the flaws X)

I would use oil rather than lacquer or varnish. Much easier to do patch repairs if you need to sand and refinish a small area.

I am dreading redecorating my listening room as everything needs to be boxed up and come out. Kitchens are a nightmare to decorate as well. I am putting it off. It needs doing but not for now. Maybe quiet period in winter I will box everything up and go for it. Dust just gets in everything otherwise. Especially with a high end hifi system. Dust sheets won’t be enough. Believe me.

Know we’re off topic but this is exactly my thoughts, I did a portion of the home as a temporary solution & never again. This is why I wouldn’t bother with actual hardwood now, if its hardwood flooring, it’s going to be engineered, more dimensionally stable in our climate & by the time its ready for a refinish, probably want a different look anyway. With that said, I’d also have a look at vinyl plank, I’ve become a big fan, easy to lay, easy to swap, waterproof, pet proof, life proof, etc.

I have had a complete oak floor adhered come up and bow everywhere. The whole floor had to be ripped up and come up. It was a shame as it looked gorgeous when laid. The whole floor was replaced with engineered wood floating floor with waterproof underlay. I didn’t lay it. Wooden floors can be a complete nightmare. Engineered wood is more stable. And to be honest some of the modern laminates are reallly good nowadays and alot cheaper and look almost as good. I am thinking laminate for my listening room. And a massive rug. Or just go for carpet instead. Currently it is carpeted but takes alot of wear as all my building equipment is constantly taken in and out through house and listening room is a thoroughfare.

Our new Media Room/Conservatory floor is engineered wood. Very pleased with it🙂

I wish I had done that in my kitchen instead of ceramic tile.

Engineered timber flooring is the best option these, in most cases it can be glued directly to the sub floor. Also good hardware stores have kits to fix scratches in timber and engineered time floors. Much easier that sanding/polishing the whole floor.

Yes and I’ve decided to change my order and put down tiles instead. Had a brief look at imitation wood tiles which looked ok. Will go for a further look next Saturday. In the end I don’t want all the constraints that come with a wooden floor.

You may well have already posted this but what is the story of the speakers please?
I have a home made set up using a Wilmslow kit and Scanspeak drivers.
Are yours from a kit or totally bespoke?

You can read all about it here:

Google “Troels Gravesen” you’ll find Troels’s website. Kits are available from Jantzen Audio in DK.

Check Mark’s profile for other speaker build threads too, there’s some amazing stuff in them.

I’m pleased you’re staying too Simon (@QuickSticks). Social media (Twitter/X etc, rather than this forum) is a nasty place, and I’ve never regretted my decision to stay well away from it. People can be extraordinarily cruel when they’re hidden behind a keyboard and screen; in the same way that the mildest mannered people can turn into scary versions of themselves when they’re behind the wheel of a car. It’s easy to say, but harder to do, but you really should ignore them; maybe even pity them for getting their kicks in such a vituperative way.

I’m not really a Rush fan now, but I used to be an obsessive one; I think I bowed out soon after Moving Pictures. I even saw them live on the Exit Stage Left tour. Hemispheres was definitely my favourite album, followed by 2112 and Permanent Waves (where the love for them began). I still listen occasionally, especially to La Villa Strangiato, which I think is a masterpiece.

All the best

CD555 now changed out and boxed ready for return to factory for service. I’m now ‘slumming it’ with CDS3, taken from second system, connected to the 555DR PS. Sounding pretty damn good and this is the first time I’ve heard it through the 552 DR amp. Very smooth.

Moving the CD555 compared with the CDS3 was like comparing a miniature Dinky with a maxed out Tonka. Not a job you want to do too frequently (not to mention the 7 transportation bolts).

Good for you for staying. I think that the moderators on here generally do an excellent job of keeping things in line - but there will always be a few know-it-alls ready with a quick judgment because they can’t help themselves. I think that they are in the minority here though - especially compared to most other forms of social media.

All the best,
M

Phew, I’m all right then. Never been one.

I had to pop over to my Brother in Laws place today to ‘temporarily’ connect up my old Roksan kit, that I sold to him last year.
We also found him a pair of Keilidh’s on a well known auction site to replace the ones I stole back from him.

Stacking aside (it is temporary) it sounds decent enough. His streaming solution will be an ‘Alexa’ pod running Amazon Music connected to preamp. You just can’t help some people… :man_shrugging:t4: :joy:

I have had the Roksan K3 system in the past, minus the power amp. Used it with Spendor A6s and Rega RP6. Sounded great for the money, nice and full but detailed. Have even thought about rebuying for the study but have held myself in check, at least for now . Just to put minds at rest my little Alexa Echo Dot was not connected for streaming duties!.

Young Mr Quicksticks, you are the equal of any one on here, and has been proven by their very strange wicked behaviour, greater than some. Why some think they can be so arrogant and down right nasty I for one will never know, perhaps these individuals are lacking in something - “Carry on!”
