The Dearth of Naim

Though I have the album, I’ve never studied the pic nor noticed the chair Keith Moon is sitting on. Rather poignant as he was taken away just a few weeks after the album’s release.

They represent hearing loss is my guess. What do I win?

That is a good thought - but unfortunately only partially correct - but still very close!
However - by way of coincidence - quite relevant to me personally.

In case I have not mentioned on the forum before, I am partially deaf in my right ear though nerve damage caused by an infection nearly 20 years ago - I can’t believe it is so long ago now.

So, rather than posting a generic set of hearing test charts for comparison with the ‘Spot the Difference’ and ‘Spot the Balls’ images I have been loading above, here is a small subset of 'similar but different 'charts form my hearing test in 2018.

Maybe more news later today?

Hi bhoyo,

Thanks for responding. After your initial winning (and only) guess, I had been considering what the ‘prize’ might have been? But in any case I think formal offers of prizes, breaches forum rules - so my posting was a bit risky anyway. But let’s see what comes up next?

I hope you don’t mind, but I took a quick look at your profile, an nDAC! wow - I wish I had one of those! In the past I have owned both ND5 XS and ND5XS2, however because I am a ‘less is more’ type of person I have kept away from trialling separate DACs and used the analogue out directly from my ND5 XSs.

As Akh666 has already had a go at guessing ‘Spot the Differences’ and got the correct assessment of graphs being a type ‘amplitude’ vs ‘frequency curves’.

The main difference from hearing test charts is that my charts are from the setup software for two HiFi products in my media room (see images higher up).

In reality there is hardly any difference (in the graphs).
(So I suppose that was a bit of a trick question).

However there are minute differences in the resolution of entering data into the control software for each product. Note that the products are simply labelled ‘A’ and ‘B’ in the data tables.

Filling in these tables is not normally done by users and is typically undertaken by dealers, but my dealer was on leave this week and let me have a go myself - because he knows I am a bit of a ‘Measurement Monk’.

If I asked about Differences now, would it be obvious which of the vertical colum(s) contained identical data - (the heading of the Column is the response to provide)??
PS: only perform the comparison of A (L ..) with B (L..), and A (R…) with B (R..).

PPS: You really do not need to attempt to answswer this - it may be that other forum users will respond.

I think what people are really wanting to know is how either of these products ‘Sound’!
:grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:

How did it sound?

I have heard very good reviews especially given the price point

painful tedium

Hi All,

Apologies for the painful tedium being felt. First a bit of background…

The 5 (five) reasons I am practicing with a loan CI-102.

  1. I may want to put a system in the study where there is presently no music (I have been loaned some ‘small’ loudspeakers as well).

  2. Some people (OP and others) seem to be flocking towards other brands for one box streaming source/pre or even one box everything - I want to help correct some of the drift by providing some ‘early adopter’ observations of this exciting new Naim product series.

  3. Personally, I have already got a really good understanding of Linn SO, like what it does, and want to find out the approach Naim are taking to Room EQ.

  4. Presently I have my sub integrated without adjusting the crossover point of the feed to the M2s - each loudspeaker or sub receives the same net L or R signal. Using Naim CI-102 as source would allow me to adjust the main/sub crossover point more freely.

  5. Finally, my sub has a Dante interface option (as does Naim CI-102) and I wanted to explore this (licenced) technology.

FYI: I am tackling this list from the top.

Background to the project over - sound report coming with next posting.

Here is the ‘sound’ report you have all been waiting for,… well almost…

As noted above, I only have one good working ear, so you don’t really want my opinion do you?

Perhaps my posting above about hearing test results makes it a bit more ‘understandable’ as to why I am both a ‘Measurement Monk’ and ‘Room Treatment Warlock’? - these technologies all help me hear great sound - the sound I heard before the virus.

So, as well as using my 1.5 ears, I frequently invite others (HiFi nuts and regular people too) to help with things.

Last Monday (HiFi ‘nut’ help) was one such example on my loudspeaker cable testing competition. English Premier or International (HiFi) - Group A Loudspeaker Cable Tests - Post Match Analysis - #275 by Edmund-of-Essex

Today was a regular person helping.

BTW, when I first met this person we got on quite well, but then when I mentioned that I was into HiFi and the amounts of money that can be spent on HiFi equipment (compared to what ‘normal’ people do) I did receive some ‘abuse’.

PS: I made an oblique reference to this at the start of my first thread.

After a while, he came to accept that there are many more of ‘us’ (not just me) and became sufficiently interested in HiFi to participate in the ‘masked randomised trial’ of Linn SO that was in one of my technical reports sent to Linn Products Ltd.

The main reason he was here today is that he has very sensitive hearing of phase and timing and absolutely does not like any equalisations being applied. Today, that was an advantage, as I could run with No SO in Linn DSM and No equalisation set in Naim CI-102.

Two experimental setups were used (Magico Titan 15 was Off and out of circuit for these tests). Test track was same throughout, streaming from Tidal (Max):- Pink Floyd Wish: You Were Here, Wish You Were Here (HD).

First experiments are A/B listening (via app control input selection changes).

  1. Naim CI-102 → Linn Klimax DSM 3 → Linn Solo 800 → Magico M2
For the first run through, Naim CI-102 was the source into Linn Klimax DSM using AV bypass unity gain on Analogue 1 input (RCA), 2V sensitivity on input setting.
For the second run through Naim CI-102 not involved, Linn Klimax DSM, with matched gain setting to the Naim CI-102 output level established prior to the tests.

Second experiments are A/B listening (via amp off/cable changeover/amp on)
For first run through, Linn Klimax DSM 3 → Linn Solo 800 → Magico M2
Pre-amplifier out cable switchover.
For second run through, Naim CI-102 → Linn Solo 800 → Magico M2

Please stay with the thread, as next post will be short…

Notes taken by me of the reaction of the listener at the immediate end of the first experiments:-

“I LIKE the FIRST One”.

We have a break, coffee, go upstairs to the study where I have the Focal Naim Manger control setup panel and I show him some of the control actions I had undertaken (including some of the EQ work that was turned off for his session). He saw the ‘inputs’ control page (see image below)…

“It’s got ALL the INPUTS I need!”

and

“This is BUILT for ME!”

and

“This is something I might consider BUYING!”

After a good chat, including a bit about the IT issues I was having between the Magico Titan Application Control Software and the presence of this new Focal Naim software and device on the network (FYI he works an IT ‘technical architect’) we went back to the media room for the second and final run through. Which he did enjoy very much.

Personally, I can hear a clear difference in the sounds, the Naim CI-102 has that classic NAIM edge and immediacy - the Linn is what I am more used to and given some of my recent cable testing I might consider one for the media room to sit along-side the Linn!

I still have more work to do (items 3, 4 and 5 on the evaluation list), but overall

WHAT’S NOT TO LIKE!

Hi Maury,

Updates? I am not sure what you want?

Perhaps it is time for another ‘Spot The Difference’ competition?

Here is the photo again from last Saturday……

And now the one taken just Now………

Hint - I think there four differences (at least).

Can You spot them?

Possibly not the right answer.

Correct - Thats one, at least three more to go.

1 Addition of cuddly toy, 2 addition of Naim CD player, 3 removal of Linn DSM and 4 you’ve moved the Naim Cl102.

Also potentially added an extra (second) antenna to Naim CI102

Correct (ish), actually your three (3) and four (4) - I counted as one, so there is at least one more to go by my counting, or by your counting my (at least) statement for the original challenge (not yet 15 minutes old!!!) still stands?

Actually, NO. Take a closer look at the first photo!
